. Tajikistan | Cheap adjustable eyeglasses for poor | Vision for the World | DOT Glasses

Overview

Tajikistan experienced the worst crisis in health care after the fall of the Soviet bloc in 1991 and the civil war. Since then, Tajikistan’s health sector is supported by a large number of international organizations, including NGOs, as well as bilateral and multilateral agencies. Key actors include the World Bank, the EU, the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. Most of these NGOs have been focusing on community-based health projects in the country.

In terms of eyecare, Tajikistan has only 9 ophthalmologists for every 1 million inhabitants, compared to 32 per million in neighboring Uzbekistan, and 80-100 per million in Europe. That’s why DOT Glasses, in collaboration with the Aga Khan Development Network, is exploring ways to enter a consortium of international and national NGOs in Tajikistan, to operationalise a community-based eye care pilot project with the radical DOT Glasses approach that makes prescription eyeglasses accessible and affordable to even the poorest people in the country.
