Overview

Zambia has some of nature’s best wildlife and game reserves affording the country with abundant tourism potential. It also contains vast amounts of natural resources such as minerals, wildlife, forestry, freshwater and arable land. In 2010, the World Bank even named Zambia one of the world’s fastest economically reformed countries.

However, about 60% of Zambians live below the poverty line, with rural poverty rates approaching 78%. And with one of the world’s highest incidence of HIV/AIDS, the healthcare sector struggles to cope. Eyecare is also an area that sees chronic human resource shortages, lack of quality equipment and poor infrastructure. Zambia has only 44 qualified optometrists for a population of 17 million people (1 per 386,000 people), whereas the average for Europe is roughly 1 per 6,000 people. And most of these optometrists are located in Lusaka, Kitwe, and Ndola, which means that much of the Zambian population has limited access to eyecare due to long travel distances and the high travel costs involved. But even for those lucky enough to be tested for uncorrected refractive error, most of the population can’t afford the necessary prescription eyeglasses.

DOT Glasses Zambia is working on bringing basic vision care to all parts of society, and wants to ensure that anyone can afford glasses when needed.
