Overview

The number of people with visual impairment in Uzbekistan has reportedly doubled since 2002, but the eyecare infrastructure has not adapted to address this rapid increase. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) initiative target for Uzbekistan was to eliminate avoidable visual impairment and blindness and to reduce the number of people with visual impairment by 25%. While the number of ophthalmologists in Uzbekistan is relatively good at 32 per 1 million (compared to roughly 80-100 per million often found in Europe), the fact is that they are concentrated in the large population centers, and mostly in Tashkent. Unfortunately, rural dwellers make up 49% of the population of Uzbekistan, which means that outside of the capital (even residing in urban areas of the regions) there is a significant lack of accessibility to health care services, and to eyecare services in particular.

Apart from primary eye care or specialized secondary or tertiary eye care facilities, around 3000 rural physician points in Uzbekistan have general practitioners who also act as family doctors. Although they are trained to detect some basic eye diseases, this is not always feasible due to the lack of equipment, knowledge or motivation. Most of the eye care facilities in Uzbekistan offer very limited services and require modernization of equipment and training of personnel. The available equipment provides very basic diagnostic services and is in need of replacement.

DOT Glasses launched its operation in Uzbekistan in June 2020, and is currently developing a comprehensive approach to address uncorrected refractive errors in the country in cooperation with the Uzbek Ministry of Health, the Institute of Ophthalmology, and the Uzbek Scientific Ophthalmology Society.
