Overview

Over the past 2 decades, Peru has seen a rapid reduction of poverty due to GDP growth, rising incomes, robust tourism, low inflation, and greater economic opportunities. On the other hand, levels of inequality increased during this period, and up to 7 million Peruvians live in extreme poverty in slums and rural areas. This vulnerable population has scant access to healthcare, a problem which is amplified for indigenous people that make up a 45% of Peru’s population.

The Ministry of Health together with Ministry of Education, Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion, NGOs and private providers support eye care services in the country, including programs in schools. There have also been several studies highlighting the issue of uncorrected refractive errors in Peru; one such study (Apurimac region, 2016) focused on school-aged children in urban areas, it was shown that 10% of school-aged children required prescription eyeglasses. Unfortunately, 44% of families were unable to afford the glasses without a full subsidy, and another 20% needed a partial subsidy to buy them.

DOT Glasses Peru wants to ensure glasses are accessible and affordable for even the most underprivileged segments of society.
