Overview

Ethiopia has experienced in the last decades rapid economic growth while at the same time making large improvements in expansion of healthcare services as well as vision care delivery. Still, given the fast rate of population expansion, population ageing, and changes to lifestyle, many Ethiopians in poor communities currently lack access to even basic vision care.

Results from the 2007 National Survey on Blindness, Low Vision and Trachoma estimated the national prevalence of blindness in Ethiopia at 1.6% and that of low vision is 3.7%, with refractive error being the leading factor. The actual numbers are likely much higher as the country of 105 millions currently only has around 150 ophthalmologists
